Pokemon Go has seen an update in which it sees cheaters getting lumped with crap Pokemon instead of being banned outright.

The update, which has begun rolling out to users around the globe, sees users who do cheat being able to find only the fairly lousy Pokemon, like Pidgey or Ratatta for example. According to a post and source on Reddit’s hardcore Pokémon Go site, Silph Road, Niantic is now “shadowbanning” cheaters by only letting them find these low value Pokemon.

Niantic have said in a statement that:

“… people who violate the Pokémon Go Terms of Service may have their game play affected and may not be able to see all the Pokémon around them.”

For example, users who utilise bots that enable them to falsify their locations or power scanners to show the locations of the sweetest Pokémon such as Pikachu and other similar elusive and extremely hard to find Pokemon from their couches rather than going out and hiking outside will find their gameplay hobbled

If you have been discovered as using one of these bots, Niantic will flag you as an “illicit” player and therefore MagiKarp, Ratatta, and Pidgey may become your only discoveries.

Silph Road has written on their site that “huge numbers of bot accounts were being flagged, though many were still operating normally.” There have been some questions asked as to why certain specific accounts were getting the boot-up-the-bum so to speak, however there is one theory being circulated at the moment speculating that Niantic is cracking down on accounts trying to access its private servers, which when you think about it does make some big sense (i.e cyber security/ensuring privacy about gamers account details).

Niantic has said:

“While we cannot discuss the systems implemented, we can confirm that we are constantly refining new ways to ensure the integrity of the game in order to keep it fun and fair for all Trainers.”

We will be keeping an eye out for any further developments regarding this issue.
