Back in May at Google I/O Clay Bavor from Google announced that Daydream VR would be coming to the Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+. There have been whispers that it was imminent recently with OTA update changelogs in the US suggesting that the Daydream compliance was added with the update.

Now it seems that Google have moved the Galaxy S8 and S8+ from the “coming soon” list to the Daydream-ready list of phones. Overnight the Daydream website was updated with the Galaxy S8 and S8+ listed directly beneath the Pixel phones.

We are seeing reports from the US that the required apps such as the Daydream app itself and the Daydream keyboard are now available for download for the Galaxy S8 and S8+ on the Google Play store. At this stage Google have not switched it on on their back end with the devices still giving an “Incompatible phone” error as you try to use Daydream with them.

With the Daydream website listing the Galaxy S8 and S8+ as compatible devices it is surely just a short matter of time before Google flicks the switch and adds millions more users to the Daydream experience. Hopefully the Australian carriers push out the required updates before too long.

The $200 question is will the Gear VR work for Daydream or will we need to buy the Daydream headset?

Marco Cirignano

Hi Scott, I know it’s not about Google daydream thingy but speaking of Samsung Galaxy S8 could you find out when are we getting July security update with other bug fix and proformance etc.. this is for outright/unbranded S8 & S8+ bought in Australia thanks. Marco.

David Watt

You should have it by now, or get it anytime now. Unbranded (XSA) firmware just started getting the July update a few days ago.
