Everyone’s favourite mustachioed plumber is coming to Google Maps this weekend in celebration of Mario day (that’s right, Mar 10 .. Mario .. get it?) Partnering with Nintendo, Google is bringing Mario to your driving experience today and he’ll hang around for a limited time.
When driving, instead of the standard driving chevron, you’ll be able to appear as Mario on the map, and you’ll have iconic sounds from the classic Mario Kart games at the start and end of your ride, too.
To get started, you’ll need to first update your app from Google Play or the App Store. Next, simply click on the yellow “?” icon found on the bottom right of your Google Maps app on Android or iOS. You’ll then see a prompt to enable Mario Time!
Once enabled, you’ll see that the navigation arrow has morphed into—who else?—Mario. He’ll be a constant companion wherever you’re driving this week—to work, to school, or the spaghetti house.
Take a screenshot of your route and share it with @GoogleMaps on Twitter and Instagram with the hashtag #MarioMaps. But remember – make sure to avoid sharing personal details like your home or work address (seriously – think before you post).
Tag @Ausdroid on Twitter in your favourites, and we’ll put together a little collection! Have fun out there, but just remember to practice safe driving on the road—we don’t encourage throwing bananas or red shells at other drivers in real life! (You can get big fines for that!)
