In ALDI’s catalogue, starting from this Saturday, 1st September 2018, for 1 week, a Medion 7-inch portable Android DVD Player for $149.

This isn’t the first time the discount supermarket chain has offered a similar portable DVD player as part of their ‘Special Buys’. Aldi offered a similar product about the same time last year with similar specs for the same price.

So lets see what you get for $149 with the portable Android DVD player:

  • 7-inch digital touch screen (1024 x 600)
  • Quad core processor
  • 1GB RAM
  • 16GB memory
  • Android 7.0
  • Xvid and MPEG4 (1) compatibleDVD-Video, DVD+R/RW, DVD-R/RW, CD-R/RW, VCD, SVCD and JPEGCD (region 4 compatible), along with Audio-CD and MP3-CD compatible
  • Card reader
  • Micro USB
  • 3.5mm headphone jack
  • Power connector
  • WiFi: LAN 802.11 b/g/n
  • Dimensions: 190(W) x 140(H) x 40(D)mm
  • Battery: non-removable 4.000mAh (enabling 2.5 hours playback)

Most of the specs are missing from both the ALDI and Medion Australia websites, so it is what it is. It could be a lot worse, but by the same token it could also be a lot better – or you could just buy a cheapish tablet. It could be worth considering for short trips with the kids with only 2.5 hours of battery life it could be a non-starter.

If you’re interested, the Medion 7-inch portable Android DVD player is available from this Saturday 1st September 2018 from your local Aldi store for $149.

I brought the model last year, failed very quickly. The tablet part works, just don’t expect to play DVDs after a while.
