After Google announced Android 5.0 – Lollipop, the first questions heard were: When is my device going to be updated? In these modern times, most of the OEMs have begun answering that question fairly quickly and this morning Sony has advised which of their phones will be receiving the update.
Sony has advised that their ‘entire premium Z series’ line will see the Lollipop update. Sony specifically named :
Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia ZR, Xperia Tablet Z, Xperia Z1, Xperia Z1S, Xperia Z Ultra, Xperia Z1 Compact, Xperia Z2, Xperia Z2 Tablet, Xperia Z3, Xperia Z3v, Xperia Z3 Compact and Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact. Sony Z Ultra Google Play edition device
While no time-frame has been shared on when the update will arrive for most of the phones named – remember Google still hasn’t pushed Lollipop to AOSP yet – they did advise they would begin with the Xperia Z3 and Xperia Z2 series in 2015.
Sony did advise that they would be back with more details on the update order soon.

No….what you have read on XDA about unlocking bootloaders, backing up TA and DRM keys, and rooting are only required to flash ROMS – the generic AU Sony firmware can be downloaded from XDA (search it’s easy!) and the ONLY thing you do is download and install Flashtool onto your computer – I have a Telstra branded un-rooted and locked bootloader Z2 and upgraded to the generic non Telstra firmware simply using Flashtool and that is it. I have generic (no carried branding) Australian stock Xperia Z1. Sony has been better than LG, Samsung, HTC and Moto in pushing updates. Got my 4.4.4 in June’14 while some other brand flagship receiving 4.4.4 only now. Love you Sony

Yay, pity us suckers who purcahsed our phone from Telstra will probably have to wait until 2016 for Telstra to put their bloatware on it and approve it for release. They still haven’t released 4.4.4 for Z1 Compact owners.
You should flash to a generic AU ROM, it’s a pretty simple process and doesn’t require any unlocking etc
First root phone. Then backup Ta keys so you can access Sony’s unique DRM protected features like low light algorithm for camera. Then you can actually get the generic AU ROM safely while maintaining warranty and full phone features. Not exactly simple if you ask me. For those wanting more info XDA has complete instructions.

I backed up my TA partition as the first thing I did, I don’t think it’s required to go from a stock Sony ROM to another stock ROM, warranty should be intact as you’re still running signed Sony code.
If you are going to unlock bootloader then you definitely need TA backup first. Head over to XDA forum. if you have already unlocked its too late. You can only use TA backup from your own phone. If you try to use it from someone else phone it will brick your phone. if you don’t restore TA partion Sony services wont work otherwise device will work just fine.
Rooting your phone in Australia may void your warranty. According to an article ausdroid ran a while ago unlocking your boatloader doesn’t void your warranty in Australia.
You shouldn’t need to root or bootloader unlock to flash the Sony Generic AU ROM, it’s signed Sony code and will flash with no unlocking whatsoever. No warranty should be lost either as you’re running an approved software version on the device. Ran it simply on my Xperia Z and will move over to a generic ROM on my Z2 when we get closer to the L release.
Everything I’ve read at XDA says otherwise. If you want to flash a ROM you need an unlocked boatloader. If you want to change your device region settings so it gets the generic OTA you need root access.
M8, would you care to share a link where we can a) read more about what you are saying and b) download this AU ROM. No-one is doubting you. Its just that everything everyone has read is contradictory to what you are saying. Personally, I have a Xperia Z and would absolutely love to install a Generic AU ROM to get away from my carrier.
