Huawei Ascend P6 — Review

Huawei Ascend P6 — Review

The Huawei Ascend P6 looks the goods, but Ausdroid takes a look to see whether it delivers. When Huawei announced the Ascend P6 back in June, it didn’t exactly jump off the page at us. Sure, the Ascend P6 looks pretty good; in fact, the industrial design is really top notch. A slim (and we do mean slim) handset with a metal band wrapped around it, broken in places only by a couple of buttons, and one could be forgiven for thinking the Ascend P6 is inspired by Apple’s iPhone 4 or iPhone 5 design. It certainly looks like one[Read More...]

Report: More $200 smartphone will be sold in 2018 than was in 2012

A report compiled by ABI research, as part of a report into the Mobile Handset Go-to-market Strategies and the Next Generation Mobile Devices forecasts that low cost smartphone shipments to grow from 238 million in 2013 to 758 million by 2018, driven mainly by the low penetration of smartphones and large subscriber bases. Though the research does also states that the “low hanging fruit” for low cost smartphones is to drive smartphone adoption in emerging markets where handset subsidization and disposable income are scarce. Michael Morgan, senior analyst at ABI Research stated that: Despite the low cost moniker, research has[Read More...]

Huawei calls out ABC over missing iview app for Android

As Android users we all celebrated the recent movements from the ABC in introducing video streaming into their ABC app for Android, and then a further update which saw them announce an Android App was in the works and would hopefully be released before the end of the year. But it appears that Chinese phone manufacturer Huawei are not satisfied with this and in a press release this afternoon called on the ABC to drop their ‘Android bias and get the iView app on Android smartphones ASAP’. Small Android tablets gain whilst Apple’s buzz fades

Small Android tablets gain whilst Apple’s buzz fades

Whilst Apple may have captured the early buzz with the tablet market when they introduced the original iPad, it seems their share of the tablet market has begun to fade according to research released by Canalys. With a tablets now accounting for 31% of worldwide PC shipments, Canalys estimate that 68 per cent of tablets shipped in the second quarter had a screen size smaller than 9 inches and that small tablet manufactures like Samsung, Amazon, Lenovo, Acer and others saw hefty year-on-year gains in shipments during the second quarter, ranging from 228 per cent (Acer) to 317 per cent[Read More...]

Huawei MediaPad 10 Link 4G, first tablet with Cat 4 LTE, 10 to launch exclusively on Vodafone

Huawei are really making a push into the Australian market of late, with the Ascend P2 being released exclusively on Telstra earlier this month, and now the MediaPad 10 Link 4G – a Vodafone exclusive, and the first tablet in Australia to make use of the new, ultrafast Category 4 LTE. The unweildily-named MediaPad 10 Link 4G is powered by the same 1.5 GHz quad-core K3V2 system-on-a-chip that powers the Ascend P2, but ups the display size to 10.1 inches with an unfortunately-low resolution of 1280 x 800. Have a gander at the rest of the specs: 10.1-inch 1280 x[Read More...]

Optus add the Huawei Ascend G510 to their Pre-Paid range

Optus add the Huawei Ascend G510 to their Pre-Paid range

It seems a lot of entry-level Android mobile devices are being made more enticing with somewhat recent Android OS (Jelly Bean 4.1 for a start at least), with some features like NFC/DLNA features making their way to these devices, albeit slowly but its a start really. That’s where the Huawei Ascend G510 comes in through the Optus prepaid store. Whilst it doesn’t offer Android 4.2.2 or a higher spec screen or LTE (4G), it still seems to offer some decent specs for an entry level device which I really have to say is a good start for a pre-paid phone.[Read More...]

Huawei Ascend P6 Australian launch – $499, July 16

Huawei Ascend P6 Australian launch – $499, July 16

This morning, Ausdroid attended the local launch of Huawei‘s new Ascend P6 handset at their offices in Chatswood, NSW where we heard from Product Manager Jephix Liu about the device. The headline news is that the device will be available at JB Hifi and Dick Smith stores in either black or white for $499. Notably, Australia won’t be getting the pink version of the phone. Somehow, I think we’ll survive. While the occasion had a lot less pomp and circumstance than other recent launches we’ve attended, it was a good opportunity to meet with Huawei’s Australian staff face-to-face and get[Read More...]

Huawei Ascend Mate — Review

Huawei Ascend Mate — Review

Can Huawei compete in an increasingly crowded super-sized phone market? A lot of our time at Ausdroid is spent paying attention to the top tier of Android device manufacturers – while Samsung is doubtless the heavyweight of the Android world, you’d almost certainly include HTC and LG as peers. Below that, there exists a broad second tier, where other manufacturers toil away without the mindshare, design, manufacturing, marketing or technical prowess that characterises that top tier. It’s here where we usually find Huawei, despite its best intentions – while it’s a networking technology heavyweight with a rich (and occasionally controversial)[Read More...]

Specs for the Huawei Ascend P6 leak with screenshots of an updated Emotion UI

The hype surrounding the Huawei Ascend P6 has been mounting ahead of a June 18th release date, with a picture and video about the phone being released yesterday. Today, EVLeaks has released specs on what will be inside the device as well as providing screenshots of an updated Emotion UI that the device will run. Hardware wise, there are two sources; EVLeaks advises that the Ascend P6 will come with a 4.7″ 720p display, powered by a 1.5GHz Quad-Core CPU – presumably the Huawei designed and manufactured K3V2 – and come with an 8MP BSI Rear camera with 4cm macro[Read More...]
