For those of you still with us, we’ve survived another Christmas and it’s now Boxing Day, which usually means time for a bargain. 2020 – a year unlike most others – is not that different in this regard, at least, and we’ve got a couple of bargains on new mobiles if you’re on the hunt while you digest yesterday’s food.

If you’re minded to partake in some Google goodness, the new Google Pixel 4a 5G is available at almost $150 off retail pricing, with JB HiFi selling the new 5G handset for just $649, and if you prefer Officeworks, you can grab it for $644 delivered, click and collect or in store.

As an added bonus, you can use Coles Myer Group gift cards at Officeworks, so if you picked up some gift cards this Christmas, you can use them in store at Officeworks to knock down the price even further.

If you’re not 100% sure, here’s a quick rundown on the Pixel 4a 5G specs – just about the best value (and best supported) 5G handset available for now:

  • 6.2″ OLED display with a resolution of 1080 x 2340.
  • 16 MP rear camera with HDR+ capabilities, and an 8 MP front camera.
  • 6 GB of RAM.
  • 128GB storage capacity.
  • Android 11 operating system.
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G Octa-Core processor.
  • Connections via WiFi, 5G, USB-C, and Bluetooth 5.0.
  • Simply connect to the network using a nano-SIM.
  • 2 year warranty.

Being a first-party Google handset, you’re guaranteed to receive software updates first, and you too can enjoy the experience of using Google’s Android in the way Google envisaged it. I’ve heard once you go Pixel you don’t often go back … but your mileage may vary.

If you’re not enamoured with Google’s Pixel offerings, you can grab the realme 6 with 128GB storage and 8GB RAM for just $319.20 at JB HiFi.

At that price, you get a phone that runs surprisingly smoothly with a 90Hz display that has the usual LCD-muted colours that are still certainly good enough when by itself. These things are only noticed when you place it side by side with an AMOLED display.

As a day to day phone, it served Scott well earlier this year when he reviewed it. He found a very responsive fingerprint reader that was easy to access from any hand and a face unlock one of the quickest in the business. With great battery life, the realme 6 is a great offering with an even better price.

realme is really moving and shaking and I suspect the company will do even more in 2021.
