Samsung’s launch of the Galaxy S8 won’t be coming at Mobile World Congress next month, but Samsung is making all the moves to ensure the phone will launch without incident, including trademarking the Bixby virtual assistant.

Samsung has applied for trademarks for Bixby in both Europe with the European Trademark and Design Network and in Australia with IP Australia. In Europe Samsung has filed a trademark application for Bixby Vision, while in Australia they’ve been a little more liberal asking for trademarks on multiple variants of the Bixby name including:

  • SAMSUNG Bixby
  • SAMSUNG Bix-by
  • SAMSUNG Bix:)by
  • Bix-by
  • Bix:)by
  • The Bixby

Although not much is known about what Samsung intends Bixby for, the assistant could help with control of applications on the phone and Internet of Things devices including their new range of kitchen and laundry appliances, as well as payments processing.

Applications filed have not been granted at this stage, but they are in the system and should be approved in plenty of time for the launch…whenever that may be. We’re looking forward to learning more about Bixby when Samsung unveils the Galaxy S8 (and Galaxy S8 Plus) in the next few months.
