Amazon App Store Live in Australia
It appears that Amazons promise to open up their Android app store to over 200 countries including Australia has come to fruition, with Amazon updating their Android App today to add that additional support. Countries on the list include Australia, Brazil, India, Mexico and South Africa. The update now allows consumers to purchase and download apps from the Amazon app store.

The Amazon App store is not available from Google Play and must be downloaded from Amazon itself. You can head over to the Amazon App Store download page and download the APK. You will need to ensure that you have allowed sideloading of apps on your Android device before you try to install it, to do so go to Settings > Security > and ensure that ‘Unknown sources’ is ticked. Once you’ve downloaded the APK simply install it.

Access to the Amazon Android App store also requires an Amazon Account so you’ll need to sign up either on the Amazon website or you can do it from the front end of the application. As well as the Amazon mobile app you can search the Amazon Appstore for Android on the Amazon website in your browser.

The Amazon App Store famously provides users with access to a free app every day. Today that app is 10000000 from EightyEight Games Ltd. It’s a brilliant game and very much worth downloading. But you can check back every day for a new application. This is a great way to get access to new applications, so check it out and see what you think.

I have first gen Kindle Fire I bought in Usa when they first came out. When I got back to Austin I was disappointed to find I needed a credit card with US billing address to use the app store. So when I heard the Fire was coming here I was hoping I couple now use the store. This article indicates this which is great but when I try to purchase from the app store I still get the same message blocking purchase. I have the latest device software. Any ideas how I might make this work?

Wonder if there’s any way to transfer the 500 odd free apps I’ve accumulated using a phony US Amazon account to a legit Australian one?

I just tried this out, and was VERY surprised to discover there’s (currently) no way of requiring a PIN/Password for purchases. There’s a Parental Control option, but it turns out that this is only for in-app purchases. I tried it out, and it purchased an app without prompting me. I discussed this with an Amazon customer support person, who said: “Ngoni:We dont have parental control on android devices. The parental control we have is for the Kindle fire which is manufactured by amazon.” If they don’t fix this, I imagine there will be a lot of kids (using parents’ phones)… Read more »
