Google introduced 60fps videos on YouTube a while back, but today Google has announced that YouTube will now support 60fps Live Streaming on YouTube in HTML5. That options is for the desktop, but on mobile, it seems a switch is being thrown server-side inducing a slow rollout of 60fps options for videos on Android.

According to reddit user AN649HD, he’s now seen the option for streaming on his YouTube for Android app, he reports that no app update was seen, he’s on version 10.18.55 and it’s not a ubiquitous release with sporadic reports of people seeing it here and there, pointing to a server side switch rather than an app update.

YouTube 60fps

So, if you’re viewing YouTube videos with the option for 60fps, you may be able to select that option in the video quality settings. But it’s a slow rollout as we’re not currently seeing it here.

As far as desktop users are concerned, if you’re using a HTML5 compatible browser, according to YouTube:

When you start a live stream on YouTube at 60fps, we’ll transcode your stream into 720p60 and 1080p60, which means silky smooth playback for gaming and other fast-action videos. We’ll also make your stream available in 30fps on devices where high frame rate viewing is not yet available, while we work to expand support in the coming weeks.

But that’s not all, according to YouTube, live streams will also be getting HTML5 playback in supported browsers. Using the HTML5 player you can select variable speed playback, as well as skip backwards in a stream while it’s live and then use 1.5x or 2x speed to catch back up to the live stream.

This is all live now, or for the Android stuff it’s rolling out, so keep checking the video streaming settings on your videos.
