With every Google account, you get a small amount of free storage available. For many users that is more than enough to last them for quite some time. But if you’re using Google Drive, Photos, Docs, Sheets or Slides then you may well run into a problem in the not too distant future.
The Background
Back in November, Google announced that they would be ceasing the provision of free, unlimited storage. This came in the form of Google photos (compressed/reduced quality) storage and Google Docs, Sheets, Slides etc. All of this was data that did not count towards your space usage in Google Drive.
This doesn’t mean that your existing data will suddenly all count and force you to purchase Google One storage. Any new data uploaded, or existing data in Google Docs etc that is updated will then count towards the use of your free, 15GB data allowance.
Options: There are plenty
We previously wrote up a shortlist of options for cloud-based storage if you need more space. That covered the likes of Google One, OneDrive and Dropbox as well as the potential to provide your own NAS for larger scale data storage.
If you’re in need of extra storage for yourself, then perhaps Google One is a viable option. But if you need terabytes in the medium to long term, then perhaps the outlay for a NAS is more suited to your needs.
