HTC-One-Kit-Kat
Anyone looking at buying an All New One, will likely consider how HTC handles updates for older phones. Historically, the short answer is ‘not well’. Owners of the HTC One X likely still feel the pain of being told that 4.2.2 was the last version of Android the 2012 flagship would ever receive. HTC have committed to at least two years of updates with 2013’s phones though, but although Ones throughout the world have been progressively updated to Kit Kat over the past couple of months, Australia has been left behind.

Thankfully, this is beginning to change, with Optus having announced that Android 4.4.2 will be rolling out to their Ones in mid-March following a short testing period. Optus are usually the last to update their phones, so it’s a nice surprise to see them upping their game.

Vodafone’s official blog lists the Kit Kat update as ‘in testing’, but Vodafone have confirmed to us that they expect the updates to be available in the next two weeks for both the One and the One mini.

If you bought your One though Telstra, it seems that you’re fresh out of luck at this stage. Telstra’s website doesn’t even list the One as having an update in the works, but we have reached out to them for comment.

If you bought your One through Telstra though, you’re fresh out of luck. Telstra don’t even have the One listed on their updates page, but we have reached out to them for comment. We’ll keep you updated when we find out more.

UPDATE:Telstra have just confirmed that they have approved the update for the HTC One, and they expect HTC to begin deploying the update OTA within 10 business days.

Does this news make you more likely to buy an HTC as your next phone? Let us know in the comments.

Telstra HTC One Kit Kat update in progress!

Al

So I’m guessing by the 15th of March, Telstra should have sent out the updates for HTC ONE KitKat?

this is so typical here. all phone manufacturers don’t see Australia as a major concern about updates .our population is small compared to USA, Asia, Europe. so they don’t see the urgency in updates.

Mic

I got a htc one xl, no update then not buying a htc phone when my contract expires in 3 months!!! samsung galaxy it is!!

Will

What if you bought an “international” version unlocked from Jb?… it seems it should have already received the update, but no dice as yet

Helen

Do JB sell “international” versions? I thought they only sold Australian stock.

Will

Oh right… So if I have an unbranded handset, where do I get the update from without rooting?

Damo

I have an unlocked one from Harvey Norman Will and yesterday i spoke with HTC support. Not sure how much to believe them but they say the updates for my phone and i’m guessing yours as well come from HTC servers rather then OTA from phone carriers. Time will tell but hopefully we get updated as well mid March.

Updates from carriers are still served from HTC’s servers, they just go through an approval process before being released.

Do you really think carriers want to build update servers for every make of phone they sell?
