Telstra Wi-Fi Hotspot
Wi-Fi is so ubiquitous these days it’s hard to think of a time when you couldn’t just connect wirelessly to the internet. With World Wi-Fi Day taking place this Monday, Telstra has announced they will be opening up their public hotspots in the Telstra Air network to offer free data to everyone for three days.

So, what is World Wi-Fi Day? According to their website:

World Wi-Fi day is a global initiative to help bridge the digital divide.

It is a platform to recognize and celebrate the significant role Wi-Fi is playing in cities and communities around the world by driving exciting and innovative projects to ‘connect the unconnected’.

World Wi-Fi Day is a unique worldwide initiative organized by Wireless Broadband Alliance under the leadership of Connected City Advisory Board (CCAB).

Telstra is jumping straight into the initiative and will be providing free wi-fi from this Friday, the 17th of June until Monday 20th of June. Telstra will allow anyone with a Wi-Fi device to connect to a Telstra Air public, or Fon hotspot for free. The free public hotspots are fairly easy to spot, they’re the pink payphones you can see above, while Fon hotspots are the ones located in peoples homes.

For existing Telstra Air customers, they can use the Telstra Air app to access free Wi-Fi until the 30th of September. If you’re not a Telstra Air customer simply connect to the Wi-Fi hotspot you’re near; if that’s the pink telephone booths, the hotspot will be called ‘Telstra Free Wi-Fi’ and if it’s a ‘Fon’ home hotspot connect to ‘Fon Wi-Fi’ to start your 30-minute session.

There’s limits, at least time limits with each Telstra Air session lasting 30 minutes – but don’t worry, you can simply re-connect at the end of each session. There’s also limited connections allowed on each Telstra Air hotspot to ensure that Telstra can ‘provide the best speed and experience’.

If you want to check out all the terms and conditions you can see the Telstra Crowd Support forum. If you’re near a free Telstra Air hotspot this weekend, have at it.
