The Android rush has well and truly started and now we’re starting to see carriers bring on more and more Android devices as the specs become more powerful and unbelievable at the high-end and more affordable at the low-end. After all the announcements and launches that happened today, it lead me to go check out Optus’, Vodafone’s and Telstra’s sites to see exactly how many Android devices are available for purchase straight off their websites.
6 months ago the clear winner would have been Vodafone; they’ve been pushing out Android devices thick and fast, as well as being the official global seller of Google’s Nexus range. But today Telstra — of all carriers — is the winner, with 17 Android devices for sale on plans, outright and prepaid. Optus is in second with 14 devices and Vodafone third (or last) place with 13 devices. Of course most carriers have a larger variety in stores, but we’re lazy and buy online. Buzz, Optus should have 15 devices listed. They still sell the LG P500 Optimus One.

The devices listed in this post are ones readily available for purchase online through each carroer. The LG Optimus One (at the time of writing) was not available for purchase online.
I’d probably strike out the Optus MyTab, according to ZTE, they have now
been discontinued and these days, finding one of these in an Optus,
Telechoice, Strathfield or All Phones store is near impossible.

I’d like to make two points. Firstly, 17 vs 14 vs 13 isn’t a huge difference. More important is the issue of UMTS band usage. For a long time Telstra has been the only one to use the 850 MHz band. To use NextG you either bought a phone from Telstra or got an import from the U.S. The other carriers used the more standard 2100/900 MHz bands and you could easily buy your phone from almost anyone without worrying too much about compatibility. I know it’s not a major carrier, but what about Virgin? They have a fairly good range.
Telstra also have the Iconia tablet..
