Back in August, ClockworkMod developer Koush released an early preview of something he was working on to make the Chromecast more useful — an app to mirror your device’s screen to a Chromecast dongle, called AirCast. However, it wasn’t long until Google put the kibosh on that, removing the features from Chromecast which Koush had built into AirCast to stream video.
After this change, and after a few ponderings on what the app should be called to differentiate it from other trademarks, the name AllCast was settled on, and today marks the release of AllCast onto the Play Store.
You can now use AllCast to stream local photos and videos from your Android devices to a range of media-player type devices, including:
- Apple TV
- Roku box
- Xbox 360
- Xbox One
- Samsung and Panasonic TVs
- Google TV (if you’ve got one)
- Many other DLNA devices
Sadly, the Chromecast isn’t amongst that list yet, as the SDK still isn’t really public, and only certain partners have been given access to it. Hopefully that’ll change soon and AllCast can support one of our favourite devices yet again.
Until then, you can enjoy AllCast for free (albeit peppered with ads and splashscreens), or for $4.99 you can upgrade to the premium version which doesn’t have any ads, and removes the restriction on video lengths as well.
Could I use AllCast to steam ABC iView from my Nexus 7 (2012) to my DLNA receiver? (Nexus 7 doesn’t support Miracast nor HDMI output).
You could try. Theoretically it’s possible.
