The camera in Samsung’s Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge is already pretty decent, and we’re about to show you how good it is in our review which should, hopefully, be published later this morning. However, this news can’t really wait — Samsung is preparing to make the camera in the S6 range even better.
What we know is that the update will come as part of the Android 5.1.1 update, whenever that rolls out to the two devices. No one has access to it yet, and it’s not the same update which snuck out to some T-Mobile customers last week before being pulled. SamMobile (the source of this news) don’t even have access to it yet.
Speculation is that the update will add full support for the Google camera API on Lollipop, including support for features like shooting in RAW and the option to control shutter speed, which the HTC One (M9) and unreleased LG G4 can already do. This seems to be fairly safe ground for speculation, as these features are pretty spectacular on the other two devices, and it would be rather unlike Samsung not to keep up when it’s so easily available.
We’re hoping that the Android 5.1.1 update will also contain a fix for the fairly significant memory leak that the S6 and S6 Edge both suffer from, but if we’re honest, we’d rather hope that fix would come much, much sooner than Android 5.1.1 is likely to.
Cool. Shutter speed control is a welcome addition. Perhaps soon we can get closer to DSLR level aperture priority control on our phones too!
