Google’s next version of Android is almost certainly going to be unveiled in a couple of days at Google IO 2015, but like Android L and Android K before it, chances are it won’t have a proper name just yet. What we do know, though, is that internally the next version of Android is being called Macadamia Nut Cookie.

Just as Android KitKat was internally referred to as Key Lime Pie (KLP) and Android Lollipop was referred to as Android Lemon Meringue Pie (LMP), Android M will be known as Android Macadamia Nut Cookie (MNC) until it sees an official release sometime later this year, when it could be renamed to anything, including Android Mars Bar, Android Moonpie, Android Milkshake, or anything else you can come up with starting with M.

Nothing is certain with Google; they could simply be pulling our legs, but comments left on the AOSP code suggest that MNC is actually a thing. In previous years, both the codenames LMP and KLP were used in the pre-release versions of Android, and the comments on AOSP (for example here and here) suggest the same thing is happening this year.

One thing is likely, though — if we see a preview release at Google IO this week, chances are it’ll be known simply as ‘Android M’, as neither the LMP nor KLP names were ever really made public by Google.

We’ll know soon enough with Dan heading to San Francisco this afternoon to cover Google IO 2015 on the ground.
