Everyone loves the Commonwealth Games — you know, the games where Australia win every two out of three medals and in 2018 they are being hosted by the Gold Coast. Today Optus have announced their partnership with the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Corporation (GOLDOC) and Commonwealth Games Australia.

The partnership, which includes sponsorship of the Australian Commonwealth Games team, involves Optus providing the telecommunication structure to more than 30 Commonwealth Games venues. Optus will be implementing the Games Network to enable connectivity for broadcasting, telephony, internet and cloud services across all Games venues.

Optus will also be providing an IP telephony solution for the on-site employees and 4G mobile services. John Paitaridis, Managing Director Optus Business, said:

Optus will be delivering an integrated communications solution to one of the biggest global events in 2018 and we are proud to be the official support network of the Australian Commonwealth Games Team.

With just on a year until the games start Optus have already begun planning and building their network and infrastructure and they will have to with so many relying on it, plus they will have direct opposition. At the same time Telstra will be trialing their 5G network capable of speeds of 11Gbps so expect there to be plenty of to and fro from the two companies.

In the end we all hope that this investment brings better deals and services for us, the consumer.
