Update 3/3/18: Google Assistant integration is now live. You can pair your Netgear Arlo cameras with Google Assistant and use voice commands to do things like “Show me the lounge camera on Living Room TV”. Here’s how to pair your Arlo cameras with Assistant:

Just yesterday we were talking about Netgear’s new Arlo Pro 2 cameras, and today they’ve given us an extra special Valentines’ Day gift. Like many other connected services, Netgear is bringing the Google Assistant to Arlo, or rather, it could be the other way around.

There’s not a lot of detail on the announcement page, but what we do know is cool. You’ll be able to use phrases like “OK Google, show me camera_name on tv/chromecast_name”. Of course, this requires that you’ve got a compatible Android TV or Chromecast on your home network, but if you’re caring about this integration, chances are that’s probably you. Better yet, if the Assistant-powered smart displays that we saw at CES come out later this year, they’ll be fantastic for this, e.g. “OK Google, show me the front door camera on the kitchen display”.

Netgear have not provided a timeline for this integration to become available, but there is some good news. It isn’t just coming for the new Arlo Pro 2 line, but the entire Arlo range back to their first Arlo cameras, including Arlo Baby, Arlo Pro, Arlo Pro 2 and their specialty cameras as well.

The future is indeed cool.
