Optus - Marshmallow
Over the last week, it appears that Optus and Samsung has unleashed a slew of updates for Samsung phones, bringing them up to the Android 6.0 level finally. The phones are all in the ‘Galaxy S’ line up, so if you’re on Optus or have a Samsung Galaxy S phone, you should try updating.

The phones we’ve checked include the Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 Edge and as we saw last week, the Galaxy S6 Edge+ and the Note 5 are also receiving the update. The almost 1.2GB update is fairly hefty but includes a heap of new updates listed in the update prompt:

The Optus update blog confirms the updates are available for the S6, S6 Edge, S6 Edge+ and Note 5. As for other carriers, Vodafone lists the Android 6.0 update for the S6, S6 Edge, S6 Edge+ and Note 5 as ‘Testing complete. Open issues under review.’ so that may take a while. Telstra lists the update for the Galaxy S6, S6 Edge and Note 5 as scheduled for the 3rd of June, while the S6 Edge+ will see it on May 30th.

The update does change a few things, on the S6 the lockscreen looks different, as does the text on the phone which is now white. My Wife says she’s not into it, but I’m pretty sure she’ll be used to it by the end of the day.

If you have a Galaxy S6 or Galaxy S6 Edge, or indeed any in this range, go to Settings > About Device > Download Updates to check for any updates.

Anyone able to tell me how MNVO’s work with updates? I’m with Virgin who are an Optus MNVO – am I likely to get this update for my Note 5 soon too or do I have to wait for Virgin to approve and test it too?

Daniel Tyson

Generally they run along the same lines as Optus. Once they start pushing updates out, Virgin customers receive updates.

They sure did and they locked a relative out of their Edge+. I had to wipe it via the Vol Up/Power/Home combo. It wouldn’t accept his pattern or backup pin.

Daniel Tyson

Interesting. Mine updated last night, went through fine. Maybe a one-off?

Mark Corlson

Yeah, I’m betting it was a one-off. It’s a shame though because now it’s scared some other members into not updating ¯_(ツ)_/¯
