Google – or is that Alphabet? — No Google – has announced a new showcase for “a celebration of creativity and code” – Android Experiments.
Android Experiments is a collection of curated apps for Android phones, tablets and wear devices developed by 3rd party developers that are intended to either inspire or educate other developers how to push the boundaries of Android app development.
Android was created as an open and flexible platform, giving people more ways to come together to imagine and create. Developers everywhere have used the unique capabilities of the platform to push the limits of what’s possible on phones, tablets, watches and beyond.
Along with the blog post Google launched an android experiments website, currently showcasing 20 apps with more to be added over time. At present most of the apps would fall into the “playful” category, with apps ranging from simple, but visually stunning games, responsive watch faces to fancy visualisations. None of these apps would really be considered overly useful, but they are all delightful.
Developers are invited to submit their apps for future inclusion in the collection if they feel their apps meets Google’s requirements.

- Projects that explore how we interact with our devices, in small and big ways
- Unique and extraordinary visual aesthetics
- Open source projects that can inspire other developers
- Surprise us – we want to see the amazing things you’re cooking up.
All apps seem to have been open-sourced to enhance the learning opportunities for other developers, so this might discourage some developers from applying if their hard developed code goes up for all to see and use.
