If there was ever any doubt that Facebook has a stranglehold on the messaging market, they’ve hit 5 billion installs on another messaging app. Following — Facebook-owned — WhatsApp hitting the marker in January 2020, Messenger has also passed the milestone. This maintains Facebook’s status as the only company besides Google to have apps with these download numbers.
This shows the enormous footprint and influence that Facebook still holds over users. Competitors like Signal and Telegram hold 50 million and 500 million downloads respectively, no small feat but still an order of magnitude lower. It will be interesting to see the active user numbers shift when the new WhatsApp Privacy Policy takes effect in only a few days time.
