For those who were expecting to get the name of Android N at this year’s IO, unfortunately for you that didn’t happen. However, Google may have just given you something much better. How would you like to be the one who chooses the name for Android N? There’ll be no Namey McNameFace here (they already ruled that one out…) but Google is giving us all the chance to name Android N.

Apart from getting to name the new version of Android N, David Bourke, VP Engineering (Android), also took some time to discuss some of the enhancements coming in Android N, the biggest announcement of which was theta Android N has reached a “stable Beta” stage (you can go download that right now, by the way).
Let’s take a walk through some of the new features announced or discussed today (note, not all of these are new):
Performance
- Open GL extended for advanced ‘desktop or console’ graphics on Android
- Introduction of VULKAN for incredible graphics, offering higher framerates with higher resoution at lower power consumption
- Improvements in the Android Run Time, resulting in anywhere from a 30 to 300 times improvement in performance
- Improvement of the Just In Time complier (JIT), to improve software performance, reduce file space required and increase speed of installation
- Removal of the “Android is udating” screen after an OS update .. yeww!
Security
- Multi-layered defence with SELINUX including Verified boot
- File based encryption
- Media Hardening
- Seamless system updates, akin to the ChomeOS model
Multi-Tasking
- Automatic ‘cleaning’ of recent apps to the last 7 used
- Additional of “Clear All” button in recent apps
- Double tap recents key to switch apps, like Windows’ Alt-Tab
Productivity
- Quick reply in notifications to reduce buredon of interacting with messaging apps
- Long tap on notifications to customise notification priority settings
Emoji
- First OS to support Unicode9 Standard
- 72 new emoji
- Skin tone variartion support
