If you’re looking to turn your TV into a smart TV without spending big bucks, you might be in luck with JB Hi-Fi reducing the price of the Foxtel Now Android TV smart box from $99 to $49.
The box, which runs Android TV with a customised home screen has dropped from its usual $99 price. It offers most other Android TV apps like Stan and Netflix, alongside the main free to air TV apps like 9NOW, 7Plus, 10Play, ABC iView and SBS On Demand. As an Android TV device it also has Chromecast built in and outputs a 4K signal.
There is one catch, though – it seems the Foxtel Now Box hasn’t received an update to the AndroidTV firmware since December 2018 – that’s long time in software updates, and is a little disappointing.

If you can spare an extra $23, you could grab yourself a Vodafone TV box which also runs Android TV (version 9 rolled out to the device in February) for approximately $79 either online or through your local Vodafone store.
The Foxtel Now Box is available through your local JB Hi-Fi store or online for $49, with online orders attracting an additional $5 fee for delivery.
Just get an Apple TV, unfortunately Android just can’t get TV right. It’s the only Apple product worth getting.
Sounds like a thumbs down for the Foxtel Now box. What do people think of the Vodafone TV box?
If it has a News Corp name on it, throw it out.
I bought one from Kogan for $60 last month and immediately bought something else. It’s terrible. If you’re a Foxtel customer already, it might be good. If not, the home screen is littered with Foxtel advertising. The free to air inclusion which I thought would be awesome is also stuck within a horrible Foxtel channel menu.
Also – it’s slow and unresponsive.
After thinking I got a bargain – I got rid of it and spent $400 on a Nvidia Shield Pro. No regrets here.
if you want to get live TV on the NVIDIA shield check out a device like the HD HomeRun Connect. It’s well worth an additional investment if you or the family watch a lot of free to air. https://ausdroid.net/2020/06/20/hdhomerun-connect-australian-review/
