LG and Google will announce two new watches at Android Wear 2.0 event on February 9

We reported just last night the strong rumour that Android Wear 2.0 would launch on February 9. This morning, we have some more news to add to that; confirmation that Google and LG have paired up in a Nexus-style partnership (to quote Evan Blass) to produce the first two watches to run the new platform.

Their names? LG Watch Sport and LG Watch Style.

Google and LG will announce these two watches at an event to be held February 9, and both will go on sale the following day in the US market. How do we know? Blass claims to have seen marketing material stating precisely this.

It’s unclear when the watches will go on sale in Australia, though we know the watches will receive premium billing at Mobile World Congress at LG’s booth, alongside their rumoured LG G6 flagship smartphone.

What else do we know about the watches? The watches first appeared as a render on Android Police (shown above), and we understand from Blass that the final products closely resemble these renders. We’ve had confirmation from Google that two watches are coming, but not the details. Now, it seems, we have a pretty solid lead on what those details will be.

LG Watch Sport will be a 14.2mm thick device available in titanium and dark blue, while the LG Watch Style will be slightly slimmer at 10.8mm, with swappable straps and titanium, silver and rose gold colours. Both will feature plastic OLED displays, but there the similarities move apart.

LG Watch Sport is clearly positioned as the flagship, featuring a larger, higher resolution screen (1.38″ and 480×480 vs 1.2″ at 360×360) and more RAM (768mb vs 512mb), though both will feature 4GB storage. The Watch Sport will also have a significantly larger battery, at 430mAh vs 240mAh.

Those of us craving LTE integration might be in luck; the LG Watch Sport features LTE, 3G, Wifi and Bluetooth, while the LG Watch Style gets just the standard wireless options. We understand that it might just be the LG Watch Sport which gets GPS and NFC — which will be needed for Android Pay — though we’d like to see NFC in both … hopefully that turns out to be the case.

Last but not least is integration with Google’s Assistant (which isn’t a great surprise), and some decent water and dust resistance, with the Watch Sport getting an IP68 rating, and Watch Style slightly lower at IP67.

We have, of course, reached out to Google about this and don’t expect to hear anything back in a hurry; Google tend to announce events and products at their own leisure, and rarely respond to leaks or rumours like this before they’re well ready.
