Android Wear 2.0 is here. Well, not on anything available in Australia yet, I’m afraid, but it is somewhere in the world. With LG and Google deciding to snub us Aussies, we all have our eyes on the other Android Wear manufacturers. Today we see some good news regarding this – the Huawei Watch 2.0.

Huawei is gearing up for a big MWC with not only theย announcement of the P10 and P10 Plus but also for the likely announcement of a new Huawei Watch (Watch 2?). Confirmed by Huawei CEO, Richard Yu on Weibo today, the new Huawei Watch will arrive with Android Wear 2.0:

Recent rumours point to the Huawei Watch 2 being a sporty version of the first Watch, which Yu seemingly confirmed with an attached image showing a person exercising while looking at what I am assuming is their sporty Huawei Watch 2 (see header image). The associated tag line is “Made for free spirits” which also fits in with the sporty rumour.

The Huawei Watch 2 specs are still relatively unknown although it is expected to come with a sim slot and LTE connectivity. This brings us back to Chris’ post the other day — who really needs/wants LTE connectivity in a watch?

I have loved my Huawei Watch over the last year and am in the market for a new sporty AW 2.0 watch so this is right up my alley. Ausdroid will be at MWC in force with Chris and Jasonย attending the Huawei announcements so we will see news on the Watch 2 as it breaks. Stay tuned as we will have full coverage of MWC with 3 sets of boots on the ground to cover all the cool new gadgets.

When is android wear 2.0 coming to Australia?? Been anticipating this for over year!

Dennis Bareis

I want the mobile connectivity (for the same reason you want WIFI in your watch), I don’t want to pay much (if any more) for it. I wanted to be the LG Sport and not bother putting a SIM in.

Is it likely to have NFC?

montalbert_scott

we expect so. surely if it has LTE they would also include NFC??

I sincerely hope that doesn’t mean owners of the OG Huawei Watch will have to wait until after this announcement to get AW 2.0. Honestly, given the Watch was one of the devices used for the developer previews, I’d have expected we’d already have our OTA by now. Only vaguely related… is anybody else a little suspicious that “Google Assistant” on Wear 2.0 is merely a new look & feel for the exact functionality that was already there? Certainly seems that way from the interactions – haven’t yet seen anything that “Assistant” does that the old voice commands couldn’t do.… Read more ยป

you make a good point Dan. I suspect that Google will look to improve the functionality of Google Assistant on AW2.0 in the future.
I agree with you on the AW2.0 on the huawatch. I love mine but still want a sporty one- the SW3 is getting long in the tooth…

For sure it’ll get better, and I know these things take time. It’s just a shame Google seems to stay so quiet on what it’s adding and how it’s tracking on bringing highly-requested features.

Basically I’d love an LG Watch Sport without the LTE and without the massive bump on the back, and perhaps with swappable bands. It’s big, it’s sporty-ish, it’s got features aplenty. I’d love if Huawei released a couple of different models, and didn’t compromise on too many features (e.g. NFC and GPS).
