Samsung’s DeX (Desktop Experience) mode has become a lot more useful with a newly announced Linux feature. Users haven’t really warmed to Samsung DeX in the past. Users have viewed Samsung DeX as more of a gimmick than a useful feature, but that changes today.

Samsung has made some improvements to DeX, integrating a full Linux system into the desktop mode. This is a huge step — Note 9 users can experience Linux when plugged into external hardware. Amazingly, Tab S4 owners can use Linux directly on their devices with no accessories needed.

In our opinion, this is huge step to make the top flight Samsung hardware stand out in the crowd of phones and particularly tablets. This Linux functionality is something no one else is doing, and takes the desktop experience to desktop equivalence.

If you’re running one of the listed devices you can register for access here, or check out the Linux on DeX site to get a closer look. On paper, you’re going to be looking at Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (which is ideal as a desktop Linux system). Importantly, to ensure the successful installation of Linux on DeX, you’ll need at least 8GB of storage space and 4GB of RAM.

We’ve already registered and once we have access we’ll be taking a closer look and reporting back.

Will Linux on a tablet offer you further functionality you need to justify and use one?
