Xiaomi Mi Box

Xiaomi have taken to their social media pages on both Facebook and Twitter to announced that their 4K Android TV set-top box will be coming to the USA shoreline very “soon”, although no official date of when this will actually occur has been provided.

The Mi 4K Android TV set-top box was announced by Google VP Clay Bavor at the Google I/O event in Mountain View overnight, after news the company will be one of Google’s first Android partners to make Daydream-ready devices. If your not sure what Daydream is exactly, you can head over to our post by Duncan, which explains more in detail about this new service but in a nutshell, Daydream is Google’s platform for high-performance mobile VR built on top of Android N.

You can watch a video of the Android TV session and the Xiaomi Mi Box event thanks to Hugo Barra here: https://www.facebook.com/hbarra76/videos/10153411698516612/

In case your not sure what the Mi Box has to offer, here is a brief rundown of the specs for you:

  • 60fps 4K video decoding
  • HDR10 and HDMI 2.0a support
  • Dolby Digital Plus + DTS surround sound
  • Bluetooth voice remote
  • USB port for additional storage
  • 802.11ac Wi-Fi
  • Optional Mi Game Controller for a console-grade gaming experience.

Xiaomi haven’t stated when the Mi Box will be officially available in the USA or if indeed it will ever come to Australia but we will be keeping an eye out for details of when and how it will be available in the USA. That said, it is worth noting that if you try to purchase a Mi Box from when it becomes available in the USA and ship it to home, that it will work from here in Australia, so you might want to wait and see.

Seems like a nice step up over the Nexus. Wonder how it will compare to the shield.
