Unless you’ve been under a rock for the last 6 weeks, you’d be aware of the issues Huawei has faced in the USA. It’s been a rollercoaster of occasional highs, but some pretty low lows…

As part of this recent and rapid journey, the Hongmeng OS was suggested as a potential solution to the trade ban with the US, which put the future of Huawei Android phones in doubt. Given the volume of handsets in question, Google lobbied to have Huawei’s access to American products reinstated.

Among all of the details flying around during this troubling time for Huawei, a very important detail has now come to light. Catherine Chen who operates on the Board of Directors and is the Senior Vice President has said that Hongmeng OS is not for smartphones.

That in itself is big, but we’ve been given further understanding that it is in fact for business, networking/routing application and IoT. For some of these applications, the speed of response is critical to operations. Huawei have done significant testing and claim that Hongmeng is faster than Android.

With all of that in the open, there’s still not a truly clean run for Huawei to continue in the Android ecosystem. So the development of Hongmeng into a mobile operating system has begun, despite noting publicly that continuing with Android is still the preference.
